Interview with Chance the Rapper about his new success, family, and upcoming albums

 Proposal

Hi, my name is Angela Scotti and I have chosen the theme of music to curate on. Not just any type of music, specifically Chance the Rapper and his success over the years. I have curated ten curations have posted all of them on this page!

Since I was a freshman in high school I have been in love with Chance the Rapper. In 2014, he was just beginning his career and I was his biggest fan. Now this isn’t a worldwide topic, but more so just for people who are interested in rap culture. But this is a topic that everyone has access to! The growth of Chance the Rapper over the years is an amazing story. For someone who has seen him grow into an idol for many, I can personally say that this is a story you won’t want to miss.

My major is communication science and disorders. Music is a way of communicating with people- it is known to be a universal language. I plan to use music in my career and I think using all different types of music is important.  For this theme I am considering using the article to why his music is free, the interview, and his music video “Sunday Candy”. The genre that most relates to these is narrative.

This theme will be perfect for this project because it explores the genre of narration. Not only does it talk about the growth of Chance the Rapper, but it also tells his personal story along with all of it. I have put long thought into this project and I feel that this is something that will be enjoyable to read and suits the prompt.

Project one essay: The Humble Man

Through his years of hard work and determination, Chance the Rapper has grown to be one of the most well-known rappers in 2018. Through viewing compositions which represents his brand- an interview with Complex Cover’s, a Vanity Fair magazine article, and his very own music video for Sunday Candy- one can understand why his career has sky-rocketed over the last few years. From talking about why his music is free to becoming a family-man, these compositions portray Chance as the humble man his fans know him to be.

The Complex Cover interview of Chance is both a visual and audio mode, making it more appealing to the audience’s senses. Visually seeing Chance the Rapper during this interview can give reassurance that what he is saying is the truth. This composition can be found through YouTube and can also be found on the Complex Cover website. All of these ways are accessible for anyone who has internet access. This then makes the audience for this composition generally young adults and older, who are into rap culture and have access to the internet or smart phone. Another group that will be viewing this are fans of Complex Cover. Complex Covers is a video segment of the Complex magazine which publishes articles about music and pop culture.  Frequent viewers of Complex Covers will stumble upon this video and may or may not become a new fan of Chance the Rapper and his work. This gives the opportunity for Chance to keep rising in success and being able to create an image for himself that he is proud of. By agreeing to be a part of this video, both him and Complex Covers will benefit in the end.

Style and design are very important for interviews because the viewers already have expectations of what they are going to see which is why the most important style that appeals to the audience is the camera is facing Chance during the interview. Not only is this enticing his fans to watch this interview for the minor fact that they will see him on camera, but it is also, as mentioned before, the creditability of facts. This interview was important for Chance because it is a hybrid genre, it is both informative and a narrative. It gave Chance an opportunity to inform his fans of what they should be expecting in the near future, keeping them loyal to him as well as supporting his success. From a narrative point of view Chace gets to talking about his life which conforms this composition to the theme.  Through the mentioning of his family and how shocked he was to earn a Grammy; his humility stands out. He connects to more than just one type of audience. When Chance is asked about his daughter he reacts by saying “I didn’t expect to come a father at 22…I was scared and in denial but every day it became a little more easy” By explaining how he felt about becoming a father, he reaches out to young parents who are experience the same situations he is. His families support is one of the many things that Chance speaks about in his interviews and music.

Chance’s family values are also shown through music video for Sunday Candy which is both a visual and audio mode, but contrast composition one in its style and design. The composition can be found through YouTube which will make the audience will be mainly people who have connection with the internet. With just the video in mind, the main audience members who will be searching for this video will be specifically young adults who are fans of Chance the Rapper. The use of an abstract style and design is what makes this video so much different than composition one. A use of low and high key lighting is used through the entirety of the music video, making watching it more appealing to the audience. Also, the use of a panning to make it look like that it is only one shot emphasizes the level of difficulty put into this video. Choreographed dancing also shines light on how much effort the director put into this video. Chance dancing and being a part of the whole video portrays him as a hard working. Most musicians are not a part of their own music videos, and if they are they aren’t the ones dancing.

Also, the use of his personal lyrics draws in attention from the audience. Creating a trickling effect, fans will then show their friends, and this will add to Chance’s success. This composition creates a pathos effect when Chance sings about his family making a connection with the listeners. His lyrics about his grandma is something most can relate to. Being able to relate to a celebrity is hard in the twenty first century. Many celebrities are known to be very materialistic and lose touch of where they came from. Unlike other rappers Chance doesn’t wear name brand outfits, instead he sticks to his normal attire. Emphasizing that he will never forget where he came from, Chance doesn’t wear flashy outfits through this entire video. Another factor is that the song Sunday Candy, was published without Chance’s name being on it. Chance left his name off the project, giving the credit to Donnie Trumpet and The Social Experiment. Proving that he is not in it for the popularity, but more so in it because it’s his passion.

All of this said this composition conforms to the theme of his humble reaction to his success.  The connection Chance continues to make with his fans, shows his humility by backing up his idea that he wouldn’t be there without their support. The genre for this composition is a narrative, although some of the stuff Chance says in this video may not be true, he adds his own personal life to some of the lyrics. His lyrics tell a story which is what makes it a narrative. One of his most famous lines being, “I got a feature so I’m singing for my grandma…mine’s is handmade, pan-fried, sun dried, Southside…president of my fan club”, which speaks to most as many find their grandmas to match this description. The narrative genre as a whole doesn’t have to be specifically about him, but more so just a story. Between the colorful aspects of the video and his lyrics, this composition forms a beautiful narrative.

Composition three is strictly a text-based mode as the media is a Vanity Fair magazine article. Readers of Vanity Fair will be the audience as well young adults who are wanting to find out more about Chance the Rappers life. Vanity Fair made this article available one their website as well as in their own article, allowing for more members of society to access this magazine. Anyone who is in line at a supermarket and sees this magazine can pick up the magazine and read the article. This makes the audience pretty broad and can be more than just the average young adult in retrospect. The main style that the author uses in the article is in a Q and A format. With this the author uses direct quotes from Chance the Rapper to answer the questions. The main purpose for the use of this style is to attract chance the rapper fans. As mentioned before credibility is a huge part of a celebrity’s life.  Not only is this informing them about who he is and what’s going on in his life, but it is also giving a reliable source. The direct quotes allow for people to read this information and trust that it is true. Chance the rapper says a in the article that “I never wanted to sell my music, because I thought putting a price on it put a limit on it and inhibited me from making a connection.”  With Chance saying this, shows that he’s not in it for the money, more so he’s in it because it’s his passion. He truly wants to entertain.

This being both informative and narrative, Chance gets to talk about his life experiences, thought process, but also gets to inform the readers on why he does what he does. Conforming to the central theme, all of these aspects support the idea of how humble Chance is. Making his music for free means that he is not looking for fortune when it comes to his success. He wants to share his talents without it costing others a fortune to listen to it.

All together these compositions help to exhibit the theme of Chance the Rapper’s humble success over the year. Not only is he a humble person but he wants his music to inspire others. He goes out of his way to make sure that his music is accessible to all. Chance being the humble man he is speaks of his family throughout these compositions a lot. This allows for people to make a connection with him, it lets others know that he is a really person- not just a celebrity.  Not all celebrities are money focused. Chance’s work reminds others that they are people just like us.

The Reflection

When writing a new assignment for a class I try my best to go into it with an open mind. I do this to be able to enjoy the assignment and not feel like it's a chore when writing it. But for this essay it was different because I didn't need to that. This was the first time I outlined a project for a class and I found that this is what motivated me to write this essay. When writing the outline, I started to get more and more excited about this paper. One important lesson I learned when writing this essay is that outlining a paper can be beneficial in the long run. From now on I will outline my papers before I start writing them, this way I know exactly where my paper is going. Another important factor was knowing how to do a peer review correctly. For the next project I will encourage my group members to be critical when reading my paper. I found that I got the most help for my paper from my group members pointing out what was wrong with my paper, not just complementing what was right. I will also take this into consideration when reviewing others paper. As for the revision of my paper, I will take sometime to not look at my paper so when I do, I will have fresh eyes. This will allow me to find the errors in my paper easier. I will also ask for constructive feedback from others before I turn it in again. I enjoyed writing this essay very much and I feel that, that is a rarity in college.
